Dat had Patty Brard <link> toch ook gedaan?? En zowaar het is onze Chris ook gelukt! Hij is inmiddels wereldberoemd op plaatselijke bodem: Nijmegen. Nergens kan hij zich nog begeven in Noviomagus of hij wordt met lof aangesproken over zijn tomeloze inzet om een stukje filmcultuur aldaar te conserveren.
As so many things in life all comes at a price: he first had to declare the business bankrupt in order to gain his status of fame. But whatever, so many did that before him, so why not our adorable Chris.
But in the end all worked out well when one of the many notables of the city, decided to throw some of his pennies to the good cause of preventing this institution, not being Chris but the Cinematheek, from extinction.

Een jaar lang Duitse gramatica studeren, dat doe je niet voor je plezier! Duits spreken ging wel redelijk, maar schrijven (volgens hun vreselijk complexe en onlogische regels) was een ander verhaal. En als we na 2014 weer richting EU moeten dan is de kans groot dat we ergens in Duitsland belanden, dus enige mate van kennis v.d. Duitse taal zou wel handig zijn. Aan de Goethe-Institut in Perth (bij de Universiteit) ben ik een jaar geleden begonnen met het niveau voor vergevorderden. Elke week 3,5 uur les was zeer vermoeiend, zeker na een warme werkdag. Maar goed het heeft geloond: ik heb mijn examen gedaan en ben geslaagd! Nu nog de 2 andere niveau's proberen te halen...
Komend semester (Feb.) wil ik me ook aanmelden voor de opleiding Sustainability aan de Murdoch University, dus het wordt een druk jaartje. Drie dagen per week werken is ook meer dan genoeg. Misschien lukt het me ook als onze intelectueel om de krantenkoppen te blijven bezetten met publicaties.

Well first things first: This is NOT EU. Western Australia is one of the most protected area's in the world. Which means they don't take any risk on contamination.
Dus de meeste etenswaren -hoe goed verpakt en verzegeld- zijn ten strengste verboden. Zelfs een appel kun je niet van het oostelijk deel van Australië naar het Westen meenemen. Boete als je betrapt wordt: een officiele waarschuwing en $3.700 betalen. Bij herhaling kan je een gevangenisstraf krijgen en als je een buitenlander bent, dan kan je een verbanningsorder krijgen voor West-Australië.
En dat allemaal om inheemse flora en fauna te beschermen.
So when Chasity kept informing if we had received the parcel they'd sent in November already, we immediately smelled trouble...
Finally, we got a call from the tenant who now lives in the apartment we formerly rented, telling us that a notice has been issued for a parcel to be collected.
En zo troffen we het pakket aan:
Voorzien van stickers van de douane. Ze hebben het pakket geopend om de inhoud te controleren; et voilà: ETENSWAREN... Ja, de 'sausage' (290gr) is geconfisceerd. Wij vermoeden dat het een rookworst was, maar we zullen het helaas nooit weten...
Ze waren zo vriendelijk om ook een brochure i.h. pakket te doen met de titel: "What can't be mailed to Australia". De douane is bereid de sausage terug te sturen, maar dan moeten we eerst $42.50 aan hen overmaken. Dus dachten wij: stop het maar ergens!
Übrigens war das Paket bereits am 1. Dezember 2012 hier angekommen.

It was a nice day to start driving down South, we heard that it can get very busy down South during Xmas holiday, because lots tend to escape the high temperatures from Perth and seek the cooler environment in mainly Margret River. Busy..??...cooler...??, we did not notice anything of that, it just kept getting hotter each day with over 40 degrees over several days.
No cars on the road towards Denmark.... geen auto's onderweg behalve wij langs de bossen zuidelijk van Perth.

Porongurup Hike of just 5km
We met a couple in their 70-ties on Christmas day at this spot. They have been coming here for years on Christmas day. We felt confident of doing the hike after the elderly couple told us that the hike is just a bit steep but certainly manageable. That day it was about 35 degrees but with some clouds. It turned out to be much more than a challenge, it was an almost-disaster.

Verrassing op de parkeerplaats, iemand heeft zijn busje geparkeert met 6 baby kangurus erin die geen ouders meer hebben, zegr zij of hij, ik kon niet herkennen welk geslecht die person was....
Auf dem Weg von Pemberton nach Margret River haben wir ein Abstecher gemacht nach Cape Leeuwin (most southwestern corner of Australia), dem suedwestlichste Zipfel vom Australischen Kontinent. Das war Jens' Wunsch, schliesslich arbeitet er ueber den Leewin Current welcher warmes tropisches Wasser bis in den Southern Ocean transportiert. So ist die Wassertemperatur dort 5-10 Grad hoeher als normal verglichen zum gleichen Breitengrad weltweit.
De grotten van de Margret River regio - Jewel en Lake Cave - het water is in de laatste 40 jaaren dramatisch gedaald door de verdroging van zuidwest Australie, en goede plek om klimaatsverandering ter werking te zien. Ze gaan nu kunstmatig water opvangen en in de grotten leiden om het leven in de grotten meertjes te helpen - kleine blinde diertjes leven erin.

Margret River - our last Bed & Breakfast at Vintners - a bottle of wine and a cheese platter as a welcome present to the town that gives the name to the entire Wine region of Margret River with >150 Boutique wineries, small wineries that produce high quality wines.
The Wine tasting tour with Guide - first stop Leeuwin Estate - one of the top on the list, we liked it but not all of the collection. The 'Art Series' wines have a lable with a painting from regional artists.

4th stop: Fermoy Estate Winery - they served the Prince and Princess of Denmark during their marriage dinner in 2004 the Princess Edition Cabernet Sauvignon, we bought 2 bottles of the 2010 edition...

The stingrays come all the way to the beach at sunset to feed on mollusks and small fish in the sand, and people feed them with the scraps left by fisherman and they love it...just watch out for the tail, as it can kill you... Some were small, but others were more than 1.5m in width! So you must be a real James Bond to try and touch these very ugly and weird looking creatures. Ozie kids are raised without fear, as they are encouraged to feed and pet these scary looking animals. Watch our video below.
Back home, stop at Busselton Jetty, 1.8km lang mit einem kuenstlichen Unterwasserriff wo man all Tiere und Korallen sehen kann.
