Aloha from Hawaii

Two weeks on Hawaii are almost over, our last night today. We had a great time on Big Island, but the Volcano dod not show Lava flows. We missed it, again. Nevertheless, the volcano was active and we could see the Glow in the night. The magma chamber is full and has risen 15m in the last few days. The islands are very diverse from corals reefs to volcanic black and green sand beaches, and great food.

Land of the Numbat and Bilby

We decided for a short getaway before the New Years celebrations and headed to the Land of the Numbat and Bilby, just over 90min south of Perth. We stayed in a lovely cottage at Hotham Ridge Winery run by two friends we met a few weeks ago. And yes, once more it was hot with 37 degrees down South. We had a great time with the two former Dutch guys who created a relaxed atmosphere on their wine estate near Wandering, great food and wine.

Little Holland in the southern Wheat Belt...

Billie and Nina, the two dogs, gave the cottages their name...

20km Dirt road into Dryandra woodlands, the home of the Bilby, Echidna, Numbat, Woylie and Bettong. All tiny marsupials who mostly come out during the night. The Numbat and Echidna are normally out and about during the day, but we were not lucky to spot them.

We found a burrow of an Echidna (Eier legender Igel) under a former Termite nest........Echidna Unterschlupf unter einem Termitenhaufen, gut versteckt.

The Numbat burrow in a hollow tree
A night-time tour through Barna Mia sanctuary where mostlty extinct marsupials are kept in an enclosure to breed them for re-introduction into the wild. We spotted them all with our red lights: Woylies, Bandicoot, Bilbies en Boodies. Listen to the Bilby and how they crush the apples.
