Van UWV naar UWA

Het lijkt een kleine stap van UWV naar UWA. Ik zal nog moeten ervaren wat de verschillen zijn. Vooruit dan maar even enkele zichtbare en voelbare verschillen.
Het gebouw van UWA (University of Western Australia) is gebouwd rond 1911; UWV-hoofdkantoor stamt uit 2005. Er zijn op UWA verschillende binnentuinen met als hoogtepunt een tropische tuin waar mini papegaaien rondvliegen; UWV heeft bovenop de parkeergarage een soort ligweide gecreëerd, vergelijkbaar met de groene weide waar de Teletubbies doorheen hollen. De verschillende kantine/bedrijfsrestaurants bij UWA hebben een zeer gevarieerd aanbod; UWV heeft één bedrijfscateraar wiers aanbod niet verrassend is. De collega's bij UWA zijn aardig en behulpzaam; UWV-collega's, tja zulke vind ik nooit meer...
Mijn werkkamer is ongeveer 12 m2 en geeft toegang tot de werkruimte van de professor van wie ik de PA ben. De professor zelf is veel onderweg, dus dat betekent dat ik heel vaak geheel alleen zit. Geen prettig vooruitzicht voor iemand die gewend is om door de kantoortuinen heel te gillen naar collega's, dat ze weer te luid aan het discussiëren zijn.

Het wordt herfst - wird Herbst da draussen - autumn in the air

Letztes Wochenende haben wir die Nachbarschaft durchstreift, erst joggen bis Forest Park, Jens dann noch ein paar Kilometer durch Mount Lawley. Meistens kleine Haeuser mit schoenem Garten, das wuerden wir auch gern haben. Wir werden versuchen in dieser Gegend etwas zu finden, gefaellt uns richtig gut, viele Baeume und Parks, nette Cafes.

Dann sind wir noch spazieren gegangen am Sonntag, quer durch Highgate bis Hyde Park, nicht so gross wie der in London, aber doch sehenswert. Herbst gibt es auch hier, die Blaetter an den Baeumen werden genauso farbig wie bei uns, also man erinnert sich schnell an Europa und Jahreszeiten. Wir haben eine Bibliotheek entdeckt im Park, eine junge Frau hat einfach ihre Buecher zum Ausleihen bereitgestellt in einem Pavillon, nennt sich Community Library. Nette Idee, soll es auch anderwo geben. Na, dann machen wir das auch wenn unsere Buecher uns zu viel werden.

Andrew heeft al en paar tips gekregen van mensen waar leuke cafes zitten. We hebben eentje ook kunnen vinden, in Lake Street is Tarts, een italiaanse cafe. Erg lekkere cake en koffie, aan de voorkant veel zon en achter en back yard om te zitten.

Van Tarts uit ben je in 10 minuten in de binnenstad, je loopt door China Town heen en belandt op een plek met vele Backpacker hostels en bars rond om James Street; een van de drukke straten met bars en disco's. Op de weg weer veel nieuwe huizen te koop gezien, zoals nabij het plein op de foto.

Sightseeing through the city: buildings and people

I (Andrew) am still free for another week, so time enough to explore the city. And what can one say about the architecture in Perth? Well, lots of new buildings of course, but they have preserved a few of the earlier buildings from the beginning of the 20th century. Although it's not uncommon to see buildings as above from the Victorian period.

It's a strange mix of all sorts and different shapes of buildings. That also goes for the people living here. Definitely a multi-cultural community. Of course the majority of the recent immigrants come from Asia. But I've seen people from Somalia and South-America. So that doesn't differ much compared to back home. Given that the Asian community is so big, it's only logical that there is a Chinatown. 
That is all of William Street and it's just a hop and a drop (yes, Ozie language) from our place. It's a upcoming street, with trendy cafes, boutiques and loads of Asians restaurants. Looks like the Korean restaurants are leading here, there are many Korean BBQ-restaurants. We still need to explore them.



Tomorrow I'll try to find the markets here in Perth. With this kind of weather surely there must be a outdoor market...??? Until then, I leave you with some more pics of architecture that caught my attention:

Settling in at work

First weeks work is almost over, I have two desks, one in the Earth Science Geography building and one in the Oceans Institute.

The Earth Science office I share with Alex and Delphine. Alex is from Tasmania and Delphine from France. Really nice colleagues, we have lunch together in the small amphitheater garden on campus.

There is a Tropical garden in front of the Earth Science building, huge Palm trees. Only animals to spot so far are birds, mainly Parrots in various colours and huge birds that try to steel your lunch.

The Earth Science building is beautiful, kind of Oxford-like style. Its probably one of the oldest buildings in entire Perth...well, 100 years is old over here...the Oceans Institute is a new building, but all new facilities and friendly atmosphere...we will have drinks today at 4.30pm as every first friday of the month, good chance to socialize with everybody I did not meet yet...socializing friday's is a must...the Beer is incredibly cheap, just 2 Dollars, in a Pub it is 7-10 Dollars, no kidding...lunch comes at 10 Dollars...lucky to have a higher salary, will see how much we have left at the end of the month. Well, still lot's to explore on campus, its huge.

Geen zondagsrust in Perth

Net zoals wij gewend waren in Amsterdam, zijn ook hier in Perth alle winkels in de binnenstad op zondag geopend. Alleen de Perthse Nieuwendijk/Kalverstraat is hier een stuk groter.

Maar het voelt niet drukker, want de straten zijn vrij breed. Vele straatartiesten die hun muziekkunsten vertonen tussen publiek. En we hebben een biergarten ontdekt, waar ze belgisch bier tappen. Temidden tussen al mensen zie je af en toe een rustige straat met een overgebleven koloniaal gebouw.
Wat hier opvalt, is de zeer slechte kledingsmaak van de meisjes/vrouwen. In 1 woord: trashy!!
Weekend was super weer: 25 graden en strak blauwe hemel. Zon hier prikt heel erg, dus insmeren voor alle zekerheid. Maar...vannacht verwachten wij onze eerste flash rains met harde windstoten en natuurlijk overstromingen. Gelukkig, wij zitten hoog en droog.
Jens begint morgen officieel aan de uni. Vanuit de huidige woonplek, die we over een paar weken verlaten, vertrekt een bus voor de deur naar de uni. Dus reistijd zal maar 20 minuten zijn.
Nu nog naar Graham Northon show kijken en dan naar bed.

Our New Castle - Ihr koennt kommen

Zum Geburtstag von meinem Vater haben wir den Mietvertrag fuer unsere 1. Wohnung unterschrieben und die Schluessel bekommen...we got the apartment keys...first foto upper left balcony...oben links sind wir.

...haben gleich alles ausgemessen fuer Kuehlschrank und Waschmaschine, alles andere ist schon drin. Natuerlich keine Moebel.......wieder ein paar Tage in einer leeren Wohnung schlafen...and how will our furniture fit in this 1 bedroom apartment??? Well, not all, but most of it...big storage comes with it and 1 car park in garage...huge balcony...15 minutes walking distance to city center and cafe strip...no problem to stay over, we keep the guest bed and we have two toilets...see you soon at 60 Newcastle Street, Unit 15 in Perth 6000

House hunting is like a fulltime job

Today was the third day in our search for an apartment. We were advised as to which neighbourhood would be nice for us; not to far from the cafe strip and also close to public transportation. So we decided to stay close to the main cafe street: Beaufort Street.
Traveling mainly by bus, we leave the apartment around 10 am to start the hunt. Lots of real estate agent hold open house, so you can have to look at the apartment which they are offering for rent.
We thaught that all the apartments here would be large compared to Amsterdam, but unfortunately they have the similair size, or even smaller living quaters, then back home. But the prices are much higher than in Amsterdam. An average 2 bedroom of 65 m2 would set you back 375 to 400 dollars per week! And yes that is only the rent and no heating or electricity costs are included.
But we found a brand new apartment for which we will apply tomorrow. And if they grant us the apartment we'll be able to move by the time our stuff arrive.
