York: The oldest settlement inland Western Australia 1830

After 2 weeks fighting a cold catched on the return flight from Amsterdam we finally had some energy for an excursion 100km east into the forest and the Wheat Belt. Clear blue sky and 19 degrees, a ride on the Great Eastern and Southern Highway.

Our aim was York, the oldest setllement inland Western Australia. Farming history in Western Australia started here. The Noongar people, the Aborigines tribe there, met the white settlers in 1830 for the first time after thousends of years being the only inhabitants.

York has about 2000 inhabitants and the shops close at 12.30h on Saturdays. A few Cafes along the main road were open, one was a family owned Lebanese lunch room. The main road is flanked by several historical buildings, almost all of them for sale. It seems like a town struggling to survive, at least the shops, because the farmers and wineries are doing well.

Mijn eerste veldwerk in West-Australë...Marmion

Eindelijk weg uit dat kantoor zonder raam en uitzicht. Op verzoek van Jessie ben ik vandaag meegeweest om haar te assisteren in haar veldwerk. Samen met nog 3 andere PhD's zijn we naar eerst met de UT (utillity truck) v.d. Uni met de boot erachter naar Hillary gereden. En vandaar uit de boot te water gelegd en naar Marmion gevaren. Even voorstellen: Jessie uit Canada, Sana uit Denemarken, Taryn uit Zuid-Afrika en Leonardo uit Mexico. Jessie kweekt koralen op schalen en verricht allerlei metingen voor haar onderzoek. De ochtend begon vroeg, heel erg vroeg: 7.00 am bij de boathouse v.d. Uni:

Echte stoere meiden, die een truck met oplegger eraan en boot erop kunnen rijden, boot kunnen varen, gps kunnen lezen en heel veel wat ik niet eens aan durf te denken.

Door de aanhoudende haai-aanvallen hebben we besloten om twee shark shields (hierboven besudeert Jessie nog even hoe het precies werkt) aan te schaffen; een soort zweep dat vastgemaakt wordt aan je enkel en die een voor haaien hinderlijke (elektrische)straling afgeeft. Na 1.5 uur op water hebben we de oogst teruggebracht naar het departement voor Visserij. Daar moesten we alle algen afschrapen v.d. koralen en daarna de koralen wegen. Sommige werden ondergedompeld in een inktbad, zodat Jessie de groei vanaf deze dag nog beter kan markeren. Koralen zijn levende wezens en hebben constant zuurstof nodig, dus je moet ze af en toe weer onder water houden, zodat de kans op sterven niet vergroot. De schoonmaakactie duurde 2.5 uur (met 5 personen constant bezig!).

Dan hadden we 20 minuten om onze lunch te nuttigen, tussen de kreeft kweekbakken van Visserij:

Nadat ik op de heenweg wachtend in de boot zeeziek ben geworden, heb ik me niet gewaagd aan de tweede trip om alle koraal-kweekbedden weer in zee terug te leggen. Na twee uur op volle zee, waren ze weer terug:

Hidden beauty of WA

Western Australia has an abundance of national parks with beautiful wildflowers and wildlife. But a large part of the biggest state in Australia is a dessert. Once at the sea floor of the ocean, now the pinnacles pillars stand in a dessert. It's mystical, the surroundings are quite surreal. So as everyone we made loads of photos of course. Just a 2.5 hour drive gets you there. We decided to stay a night and check out the nightlife of the adjacent town called Cervantes. This was a big laugh! It had one main street with supermarket, post office, fish & chips store, country club house, hang out for youngsters and a restaurant. They told us to make a reservation, because it will get busy; so not true! One thing though: the air is clean and the sky at night is magical. So much for country towns.

Another strange thing are the bacteries of 4600 million years ago: Stromatoliths. We saw these in a shallow lake on our way back home. It's looks like a rock, that's why it has the nickname living rocks.

And then Jens's his favorite wildflowers: Banksia. A flower bought from the florist will cost about $5 and will last for at least 3 weeks. That's about the only thing what is cheap here!!

And before I forget: Xanthorrhoea. Always puts a smile on Jens's face. Not because of the plant, but because of the nickname: The Common Blackboy (this is also a form of domestic abuse!!)

Op Goede Vrijdag hebben we het heel rustig aangedaan met een ontbijtje in onze voortuin.
Nu bijna alles op zijn plek is in de woning, kunnen jullie een blik werpen op het resultaat:

We moved, finally in the new house and a contract for 2 years. So far, all our neighbours seem really nice and friendly. We shaked many hands during the move, all neighbours were curious to meet the new guys in the pink block.
We hired a small company for the big stuff, all the boxes we brought ourselfs to the new home over the past 10 days.

Our old apartment almost empty, happy to leave the noisy castle! Now, we hope that we find new tenants very soon to stop paying double rent.

Finally settled, Internet worked after 1 day of moving, what a surprise. Normally it takes up to 1 week and yes, its not for free to get re-connected.

Australia Day 2012, Perth

A day off all across Australia, reason enough for another 'Safe Event' with picknick and concerts along the Swan River. 'Safe Event' means: Drinks (1 six pack per person or 1 bottle of wine) only in designated areas between 6.30-8pm, Drinks allein in abgesperrten Gebiet zwischen 18.30-20 Uhr (1 six pack Bier oder 1 Flasche Wein). Thats how it is here in Western Australia, Alcohol and Smoke Free event. The State forces on you what you can (not!) drink, where, how much and at what time...Welcome to Nanny State Western Australia!

O.K., we still enjoyed ourselfs since it was 40 degrees outside and alcohol the last thing we needed. We decided to go to the Aborigines and Torres Strait islanders Concert at Supreme Court Gardens. Das Aborigines Rockkonzert war das beste ueberhaupt, wir haben bis dahin nie so viele Ureinwohner auf einem Platz gesehen und die Stimmung war gut.

The Fireworks (see video)were the big Highlight of the day or rather the night! Everybody lined up along the Swan River to wait for the Fireworks to start at 8pm. Well, it was a great night with actual natural fireworks happening at the same time. Thunder and lightning mixed with the Fireworks, it rained, but the Palm trees kept us semi-dry.

On Australia Day there's also a celebration for the new Australian Citizens at special ceremonies in town halls where people from all over the world declare to respect to Australia and its constitution. We would be already happy to become just permanent residents, that changes a lot in terms of health care insurance and mortgage conditions. We could finally buy our first little house in Australia. Let's see what the future brings. Talking about houses, next time we might just have some great news regarding a new apartment with a courtyard. Hollandse BB met R...lekker...!!!

Een tijd geleden wilden we Bruine bonen met kip en rijst klaarmaken, maar we vonden maar geen bruine bonen i.d. supermarkt. Iets dat heel normaal voor ons is, lijkt hier een rariteit. En toen we in The Re Store Northbridge gingen shoppen vonden we echte Hollandse Bruine Bonen:

In The Re Store hebben we vele Europese producten gevonden, die in de 'gewone' supermakrt niet voorhanden zijn. Maar ja, je betaalt er ook naar! Een grote blike Bruine bonen $ 6.30 (ruim 5 euro dus!). Maar dan heb je ook wat: Smakelijk eten!

Op veler verzoek ons recept BB met R, dat is Bruine Bonen met Rijst:
Snipper een uitje en een grote tomaat en braad dit aan met een flinke scheut olie en een kontje margarine. Wrijf kip in met zwarte perper en knoflook (pasta) en leg daarna de kip in de pan. Beide kanten braden en dan 3 laurierblaadjes toevoegen. Bruine bonen laten uitlekken en dan over de kip gieten. Goed roeren en 2 bekertjes water, 2 eetlepels soja saus en 1 (runder) boullion blokje toevoegen en afdekken. 30 min (niet op hoge vuur!) sudderen; Honey, diner is ready!
