We decided for a short getaway before the New Years celebrations and headed to the Land of the Numbat and Bilby, just over 90min south of Perth. We stayed in a lovely cottage at Hotham Ridge Winery run by two friends we met a few weeks ago. And yes, once more it was hot with 37 degrees down South. We had a great time with the two former Dutch guys who created a relaxed atmosphere on their wine estate near Wandering, great food and wine.
Vor der Neujahrparty haben wir noch einen 2-Tages Trip ca. 90min suedlich von Perth gemacht. Wir haben Freunde besucht die dort ein Weingebiet aufgebaut haben, Hotham Ridge Winery. Auf dem Weingut kann man in kleinen Cottages uebernachten oder im Haupthaus mit Blick durch den Glasfussboden in die Weinhalle. Alles ganz stilvoll getan, tolles Essen und Wein. Kleiner Geheimtip, zumal es auch nahe der Dryandra Woodlands liegt, wo man seltene Beuteltiere sehen kann, tagsueber und Nachts.

20km Dirt road into Dryandra woodlands, the home of the Bilby, Echidna, Numbat, Woylie and Bettong. All tiny marsupials who mostly come out during the night. The Numbat and Echidna are normally out and about during the day, but we were not lucky to spot them.
Wir sind ca. 30km mit dem Auto ins das Dryandra Woodland gefahren um dort seltene Beuteltiere zu sehen. Vor allem Numbat und Echidna wollten wir suchen ueber Tag. Leider haben wir keine gesehen, aber dafuer die Bauten von beiden Tieren gefunden.
We found a burrow of an Echidna (Eier legender Igel) under a former Termite nest........Echidna Unterschlupf unter einem Termitenhaufen, gut versteckt. Aber er kam nicht raus oder war schon unterwegs.
Hier lebt wohl der Numbat, ein 30-40cm grosses Tierchen dass aussieht wie ein Squirrel, der Bau ist ein einem hohlem Baumstamm....The Numbat burrow in a hollow tree
Abends 19 Uhr gings nach Barna Mia Sanctuary um dann noch die Nacht-aktiven Beuteltiere zu sehen, vor allem den Bilby wollten wir sehen......und ja, alle kamen raus als es dunkel war. Mit rotem Licht, dass die Tiere nich stoert, gingen wir auf Suche langs der Futterstationen. Und es dauerte nicht lange bis sie alle rauskamen: Woylies, Bandicoot, Bilbies en Boodies.
